Silver Sneakers

I had the best day EV-ER. I decided since I was paying 80 bucks a month for the YMCA membership, I should at least go and sip my fine tea with tupelo honey and drink all the coffee I can with lots of the powdered creamer and use way too many stir sticks....like 80 bucks worth. Ya know what I am sayin? Well, while I loaded all three Twerps in the car, I noticed the Y's Wellness Schedule on the floor board of the car. And lo and behold there was a Yoga class starting in 30 minutes....That was prit near perfect.
I ran back in the house to put on my Yoga pants, and we were off..
I thought how wonderful this was going to be. Surely I would meet some other SAHM and we would have an instant connection and become BFF's and join a Bunco group together and make homemade Christmas ornaments together for our ornament and cookie exchange.
Well, I should have read the fine print.

I showed up in plenty to time and check the Twerps in their class and made my way to Workout Room X. I was almost a little giddy with excitement. I walked in and Sally, the instructor was sitting on the floor criss-cross applesauce. She was the epitome of a yoga instructor. I know she burned patchouli incense in her town home and had beads that separated her bedroom from the kitchen. And I am most certain she had an old worn out pair of birkensteins that adorned her tye-dyed shirt and cargo pants. She even had a little eucalyptus mossy smell that I am sure was from her car incense. The only thing she was lacking was for her strawberry blonde hair to be pulled up in pigtail braids.

But Sally looked at me a little strange when I walked in and introduced myself as a new member of the 11:00 yoga class.

She asked, "You know this is basic yoga, right?"

"Well, yes. I think it will be perfect for me."

"Okay, you are welcome but if you start to feel uncomfortable, you may leave at anytime."

Uncomfortable? How would I feel uncomfortable? Was this nude yoga? Now that would make me feel uncomfortable. Somethings are better NOT done naked....like opening a pickle jar....Anyone remember that Seinfield? Anyways, this was one of those episodes...naked yoga would be no good. But I was safe...that was not the case.

Margie came in next. She was in her late sixties I would guess and beautiful. She has jet black hair and fuchsia lipstick with large gold hoop earrings and a ring on every finger. She was dressed in all black and looked stunning for a yoga class. Next her friend came in and they began to pull a chair out for Suzie. Suzie is always late and they do not want her dragging her balance chair over and making all that noise while they are meditating. Soon the room filled with nine woman...all precious...all beautiful...and all over sixty. I took a look at the agenda and the class was entitled, "Yoga for Silver Sneakers." I mean seriously, how encrypted is that?

Well, it was getting started and they had to have the lights off and then they forced me to the front so I would not be looking at them. They were so modest and I thought that was the cutest thing ever. I stayed and got quite a little work out and chatted with all the ladies afterwards. I even had to go get Baby Twerp cause he was crying for his momma (Does this surprise you?) and brought him back in....He was doted over. These ladies were PRECIOUS!

I cannot wait to go back. The lady next to me just lost her brother so she missed last week and Margie sometimes brings her grand baby that maybe Baby Twerp can play with. And Suzie was late again, and probably will next week too...but we still love her and will get her a chair, cause that's what friends do. And Margie called me beautiful so she is so my fave.

I know the class in not intended for me, but I LOVED it and had a blast and cannot wait to see if they have a Bunco group already going. I will make the coffee cake. I am so stoked.

So next week wouldn't it just be the sweetest to bring little treats for them? I was thinking about baking cookies or magic bars, but what if they are diabetic? Or trying to watch their weight?

Do you have any good ideas? Maybe some of PW's yogurt with some fresh berries from the Farmer's Market? Or is that over the top? I will need to do 10 of them. Ya know something that screams Martha Stewart but without the ankle bracelet and the jumpsuit.

Ooohhh...I have a fruit salsa that would be good! It's:
1 Fuji apple - peeled, cored and diced
1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
2 kiwis, peeled and sliced
2 bananas, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

I also added a little apple jelly, I'd say two tablespoons. Serve it with Stacy's Cinnamon Sugar pita chips and you're good to go. I would let the fruit sit overnight and maybe add the banana in the morning.

I love this story!!

How fun! I think yogurt with berries would be a great idea - something light, since you are working out and all. ;-] Maybe Baby Twerp can make a new friend!

Hey I like that idea! Be the token spring chick in the group! I just love "silver sneaker" types. They are always the friendliest and know the best gossip from ages back, literally! It's like hanging out with the Ya Ya's! I think they would love anything you do next week, including just showing up and being the fun and young you!

Sounds like a good time and kinda what you were looking for, just in a different package than you expected. My BFF is almost 20 years older than me! She used to be my babysitter.

How FUN! A random yoga class and now you have your own group of ya-ya's! Welcome to the sisterhood!
I am sure something fruity and healthy would be a great after-workout snack! Maybe a jello fruit salad?? ;) Wiggles and giggles?
